Have you ever heard the expression “numbers never lie”? This just so happens to be one of my favorite sayings. The beauty of numbers is that they always tell the truth. They remove human elements such as emotion, bias, judgment and error, revealing much-needed data. Long-term post-acute care (LTPAC) providers have been quickly thrust into the new age of analytics. This begs the questions, what exactly is analytics, and how do they impact LTPAC providers and ultimately, patients?
First, let’s define analytics. According to www.BusinessDictionary.com, analytics (noun – an-a-lyt-ics /anəlidiks/) “…often involve studying past historical data to research potential trends, to analyze the effects of certain decisions or events, or to evaluate performance of a given tool or scenario. The goal of analytics is to improve the business by gaining knowledge which can be used to make improvements or changes.”
In the LTPAC industry, analytics are all around us. They can be seen in quality measures (QM), clinical key performance indicators (CKPI), and Centers of Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) Five Star Ratings, just to name a few. So how in the world do you keep it all straight?
The PointClickCare® Analytics module will do just that. Prior to enabling this module, PointClickCare will pull in previous data from your Minimum Data Set files. From that time forward, the information will flow directly to the Analytics module each time an MDS is completed.
PointClickCare the Quality Measures Module
Given that MDS data is being uploaded in real time, you will have the ability to monitor your QMs in a much more timely fashion. Within the Quality Measures tab you will see facility and corporate dashboards which will display each of the QMs by code number and short name. You will also see the QM numerator, denominator and score. This will be color-coded—green for below the benchmark, and red for above the benchmark. The benchmarks will be entered for the both the facility and the corporate level by you. This gives your organization complete control in determining the expectations.
Here’s an example of this:
Another feature is the ability to see trends. This feature is available for three months, six months, 12 months, and 18 months. The variety of reports you can compile is never-ending.
PointClickCare Analytics Tab #2: the Performance Improvement Plan Module
The second tab in Analytics is for your Performance Improvement Plans (PIPs). The PIP dashboard shows you a summary of the PIPs for your organization with a trend graph. You can see a snapshot of all of the PIPs for your organization (active and closed), as well as your PIP title, created date, target end date, category, root cause category, facilitator PIP status/PIP health, and outcome.
You will also be able to enter facility or corporate PIPs in this area. This tab will walk you through the necessary steps to create your PIP. The PIP is set up using the Plan, Do, Study, Act framework and includes: opportunity, team, analysis, aims, interventions, study, history and outcome. Completing PIPs in this tab allows multiple staff members to have access and be able to enter data, which ultimately increases compliance and timeliness with completion of tasks within the PIP.
PointClickCare Analytics Tab #3: the Clinical Key Performance Indicators Module
The data for CKPIs is taken directly from the MDS data. There are no special formulas or covariates in this category, just straight data. You are able to see the average and the actual score for each of the CKPI categories. The categories include: antipsychotic drugs, behaviors, cognition, decline in activities of daily living (ADLs), falls, mood, new diagnosis, nutritional, pain, physical restraints, restorative, skin, therapy, and urinary incontinence. The trending option is also available here for three months, six months, 12 months, and 18 months.
Another feature is the resident characteristic report. This will allow you to see the individual residents and what they are triggering for. This is an excellent source of data to review in your Quality Assurance/ Performance Improvement (QAPI) meetings.
